Hyalgan is used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee in patients who do not respond adequately to conservative nonpharmacologic therapy or simple analgesics. Hyalgan contains hyaluronate, a substance naturally found in the synovial fluid that lubricates and cushions the knee joint. When injected into in the knee, it helps to relieve pain by supporting the joint and preventing wear and tear. Hyalgan injections can be used in addition to prescription pain relievers. The manufacturer of this product is Fidia.

Osteoarthritis is characterized by pain and stiffness in the joints that worsens with age. These symptoms are attributed to a loss of synovial fluid in the joint.
